Petai Prawn Plot

Only the braveheart can bear the stinggg of Petai - but once stung- oh they become delicious add-ons to health-conscious diet. I mean you want spice?? do away with chilli and embrace pettai's pungency! next to wasabi, of course.


You'll Need

  • Petai 100gm
  • Tamarind - strained
  • Shallots
  • Candlenut(buah keras)-optional
  • Peanuts
  • Red Chilli Flakes
  • Shrimp Paste - Belacan
  • Lemongrass
  • Galangal
  • Tomato sauce
  • Olive oil

Start to Cook

  • Strain tamarind water - set aside
  • Prepare spice paste by grinding together: shallots + candlenut (buah keras)(optionally you can add just peanuts) + ground red chillies (flakes) + shrimp paste (belecan) + lemongrass + galangal roots >>>>> grind to semi-coarseness
  • Heat olive oil/sesame oil and fry the paste till cooked.
  • Stir Fry Petai till lightly braised. Add prawns <diced> and fry thill light red.
  • Add tamarind water+tomato sauce


After-thought

  • Serve the sambal with rice or you can simply use it as dip for bread :)


This is a twist in story to Sambal Petai that Nasi Lemak comes with ! Its the 'uniqueness' of Petai, that it will stand-out with any Malaysian/Chinese cuisine.
