Note: I'm Dutch; my English isn't all that perfect, so writing this was hard. I have absolutely no idea if I got all the cooking jargon right. If something is wrong, please let me know :)

'Gehaktbrood'?[edit]

Yes, 'Gehaktbrood'. 'Meat bread', Bread with meat in it! A (goon) housemate sometimes calls them Manbabies, but that’s way to GBS for me.

My dad says he invented them and since he is my dad, I believe him. Now it's time to let the rest of the world know about the Dutch Gehaktbrood!

One bread is usually good for 2 (hungry!) students, but you'll have no problem when feeding 3 or 4 people, just add some more vegetables.

Ingredients[edit]

Gehaktbrood01.jpg

  • 300 grams of beef
  • 2 Onions
  • Some nice spice's (salt, pepper, whatever)
  • Some vegetables (Peas and Carrots)
  • Something to make bread (500 grams)

Let's go![edit]

First step: Make some white bread dough. I don't know how you guys make bread; I use 'Koopmans Mix voor Brood (wit)'. The only thing I have to add is some water and butter. If you don't have something like that, just do whatever you do when you make bread.

When you have something like this, put a towel or some alluminun foil over it and let it rest for about 10 minutes.

Slice your onions, it doesn't matter how they look when you are finished.

Now throw the meat in a pan and brown your beef

Throw the onions and spices in there near the end.

This took about 10 minutes, just in time for the dough!

Throw the dough on your counter

And do what I did:

Great! Now throw the meat on there..

Now roll up the dough like this:

Perfect! Now grease an oven plate and place your dough there.

Ok, now the bread has to rise for about 30 minutes. I set the timer on 15 minutes:

Then I fire up the oven.

There is one problem though, our oven sucks. Whatever you do, he will never get as hot or cold as you tell him to. When I'm at my parents, I usually go for 150 degrees Celsius.

After another 15 minutes, the oven is ready to go!

Place the dough in the oven

Now wait for about 15/20 minutes

I usually monitor my dough a lot, every 10 minutes or something. This is mainly because our wacky oven.

When done, the bread should look something like this:

Before you declare the bread 'ready', you have 2 options:

1) You slice the bread and put it back in the oven and bake it for about another 5 minutes. This makes the bread crispier on the inside.

2) You slice the bread and eat it. Sometimes the bread can be a little sticky, this is why I usually go for option 1.

You're done! Serve the bread with some vegetables. I usually go for peas and carrots!
