This is my mom's barbecue sauce recipe. She gave it to me over the phone after I'd moved away and was craving her bbq chicken. I've since made it several times, and it just plain tastes like my childhood. This is a great recipe for those of us who don't like spicy foods, either, as it's more savoury and cinnamony than hot.

In a small saucepan combine all of the ingredients. Bring to a boil and lower heat to "low." Simmer for about 1/2 hour, give or take. Unused portion keeps great in fridge for months - I like to decant some back into a squeezable ketchup bottle to put straight onto burgers, fries, and especially chicken on the grill (spread the sauce around with a little brush).

Ingredients[edit]

  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 Tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1-2 Tablespoons cinnamon (to taste)

Method[edit]

In a small saucepan combine all of the ingredients. Bring to a boil and lower heat to "low." Simmer for about 1/2 hour, give or take. Unused portion keeps great in fridge for months - I like to decant some back into a squeezable ketchup bottle to put straight onto burgers, fries, and especially chicken on the grill (spread the sauce around with a little brush).
